Europcar operates two Irish car hire brands, CarHire.ie and Irish Car Rentals, providing convenient vehicle rental solutions for domestic and international customers.
Project Brief
The Europcar brand approached us to update two of their Irish retail sites, Irish Car Rentals and Car Hire. Our goal was to design and develop two website that are aimed at different users. Irish Car Rentals is for user who need a car for leisure and Car Hire is for users who need a car for business purposes. I carried out the UX for Irish Car Rentals and UI for Car Hire with two colleagues.
Usability Testing
We carried about usability testing in-house to identify the biggest pain points for users. We then took that feedback and organised it from high to low priority, We did this so we could focus on the most important changes first and meet our deadlines, This feedback informed our design decisions in the wireframing stage.
UX Challenges
Clearly identifying the key user personas for each website was an important task. Ultimately the website have a very similar function but it’s the images, branding and featured content that distinguished them from each other. Irish Car Rentals was mainly for tourists and holiday-makers. Car Hire was for businesses and customers who might hire a car once a month for work.
Another challenge was that we could not change the functionality of the search criteria and filters. We had to work with what was already present on the site.
After internal and external reviews we finalised fifteen wireframes that would make up the new Irish Car Rental website.
UI Process
The Car Hire website is mainly for business customers and van hire. We wanted to emulate this through the use of colour and imagery on the website. I use a design system in all projects as it is important for continuity and speeds up any design amendments.
It was particularly important to use a design system for this project because we had four designers working together. I also worked very closely with the development team to review and amend the test site before it went live.
